David Lam Chun-fai (林鎮輝) was born in Hong Kong in 1932, and until his emigration to Canada in 1965, was an active artist and arts administrator. He spent his formative years training with the Hong Kong master Lee Byng (李秉, 1903-1994). He also worked as an assistant curator in the City Hall Museum and Art Gallery, the precursor to the Hong Kong Museum of Art.

This retrospective exhibition marks Lam's eightieth year, and will include paintings from as early as the 1960s when he was a young artist in Hong Kong and a founding member of the experimental Circle Art Group (中元畫會). The earlier paintings show Hong Kong as it was, in intricate watercolours that contrasted with the artist's mature depictions of the monumental and expansive landscapes of his adopted home. These works often cover the surface in dense opaque colours, suggesting man's humble place in this world. Many of the works have never been exhibited in Hong Kong before.

We are pleased to have an exclusive tour with Lam at the beginning of his retrospective exhibition. It will be a unique opportunity to hear from an accomplished artist about his lifelong journey of passion and labour of love for the arts.
